North County Oncology is proud to offer an exciting option for relief from the pain associated with cancer that has metastasized to the bone. This highly specialized treatment is known as radionuclide therapy and has the ability to specifically target the pain that originates from cancer that has developed in or spread to the bones. Unlike traditional pain control with NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) or morphine-based medications, radiopharmaceuticals are designed to deliver pain-relieving radiation therapy directly to multiple bone metastases during a single infusion. Utilizing the areas of bone with high turnover that is characteristic of bone metastases, radiopharmaceuticals such as Samarium 153 (Quadramet®) predominantly collect in these bony lesions leading to lasting pain relief in the majority of patients after a single treatment. Many people who achieve pain relief with radiopharmaceuticals find that they are able to lower or even stop their use of other pain medications under the guidance of a medical provider.

North County Oncology also offers Zevalin® infusions, a potent treatment option for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. This groundbreaking therapy known as radioimmunotherapy utilizes a monoclonal antibody linked to a radioisotope which specifically targets the CD20 antigen found on 95% of B-cell lymphomas. This allows the oncologist to deliver a therapeutic dose of radiation directly to the non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer that is considered to be inherently sensitive to this type of treatment. As reported in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, in previously untreated cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, "radioimmunotherapy can produce overall response rates of 90% to 100%, complete response rates of 60% to 95%, and durable remissions."1

North County oncology is proud to be the only oncology clinic in California to have the ability to provide these services on-site. Please speak with one of our onocologists to find out if you are a candidate for treatment with radionuclide therapy or radioimmunotherapy.
